Swanton Morley Festival 2019

Swanton Morley Village Festival which is being run under the auspices of Swanton Morley Parish Council and to be held over two weeks in July.

The vision for the two-week 2019 Swanton Morley Festival is all about bringing people together, including from surrounding towns and villages, fostering a sense of community pride and unification.  It is not often that everyone is invited to the same party and we have a programme of events designed to be informative and enjoyable for all ages and tastes.  Some have educational or historical value – the Village was the home of Richard Lincoln, an ancestor of Abraham Lincoln and there is an exhibition in the Church celebrating that connection.  Local clubs and groups are offering opportunities to try out a new sport or learn a new skill. We have artists and crafts people demonstrating their creations, the chance for people to showcase themselves in ‘Swanton’s Got Talent’, competitions to test children and adults alike and a Ceilidh, providing a family-oriented evening of music and dancing.

We launch on the evening of Friday 12th July with a Jazz Picnic hosted by John Carrick at Castle Farm with the fabulous DixieMix Jazz Band and have a full-to-bursting two weeks of sports, culture, competitions and live music events finishing on Saturday 27th July with a grand finale of Dereham Band’s ‘Brass on the Grass’.

Highlights include a beautiful classical concert featuring a flautist who was a BBC Young Musician of the Year finalist performing in a Flute and Harp duet.  This is being held in All Saints Church, Swanton Morley at 5pm on Sunday 14th July, with a backdrop of an exquisite Church flower festival. There is a Ceilidh at the Village Hall on Friday 19th July, with entertainment for all the family. In fact, if you go to the What’s On page, you will see that there are a number of different village venues whose owners have kindly given their time, location and funding to support the Festival – it is a magnificent community effort.

The centrepiece of the Festival is the jam-packed Village Fete Day at Swanton Morley Village Hall on Saturday 20th July starting with the opening ceremony and a vintage aircraft flyover.  The day has something to please all ages and tastes with a chance to sample food from around the world and enjoy a day of traditional stalls and games.  The day continues with a craft fair, displays from the Queens Dragoon Guards, Norfolk Fire & Rescue, Norfolk Police, The Hawk & Owl Trust, Falling Starr Wrestling, Dog Agility and many others.  The evening events follow with ‘Swanton’s Got Talent’, a showcase of local talent, and finally –  for those of us still standing and with enough stamina – a disco and karaoke by Beatz Boutique.
